La Bible d’Alexandrie and Septuaginta: VTG

Volumes of La Bible d’Alexandrie (Cerf) and Septuaginta: Vetus Testamentum Graecum (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht) can be difficult to cite. The official titles of individual volumes (see, e.g., here and here) include the series name, leaving one to think that one should treat volumes from these series as multivolume works:

Cavalier, Claudine. Esther. Vol. 12 of La Bible de’Alexandrie. Paris: Cerf, 2012.

Ziegler, Joseph. Isaias. Vol. 14 of Septuaginta. Stuttgart: Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1967.

However, for ease of reading, we recommend treating these two series like other series; that is, include the series name as a separate element in the bibliographic record:

15. Claudine Cavalier, Esther, BA 12 (Paris: Cerf, 2012), 15.

25. Cavalier, Esther, 15.

Cavalier, Claudine. Esther. BA 12. Paris: Cerf, 2012.

18. Joseph Ziegler, Isaias, SVTG 14 (Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1967), 85.

22. Ziegler, Isaias, 85.

Ziegler, Joseph. Isaias. SVTG 14. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1967.

As the examples above suggest, the following abbreviations can be used for each series:

BA La Bible de’Alexandrie
SVTG Septuaginta: Vetus Testamentum Graecum

A list of available volumes in each series can be found here and here.

For more on the distinction between series and multivolume works, see the SBLHS 2 §6.1.3.5.
