Formatting series volume identifiers can be problematic when a series begins anew or is divided into distinct concurrent sections. In such cases, the notation 1/ or 2/ distinguishes the different series.
1. Consecutive Series
When a series begins anew, we prefer that authors distinguish between the old and new series with the appropriate label: 1/ or 2/. We recognize, however, that volumes in a series 1 probably do not indicate that a series 2 followed, so both forms of the following citation are correct:
Robinson, John A. T. The Body: A Study in Pauline Theology. SBT 5. London: SCM, 1952.
Robinson, John A. T. The Body: A Study in Pauline Theology. SBT 1/5. London: SCM, 1952.
Volumes in a series 2 are almost always identified as such, so the proper citation of such a series should include that information:
Jeremias, Joachim. The Prayers of Jesus. Translated by John Bowden, Christoph Burchard, and John Reumann. SBT 2/6. Naperville, IL: Allenson, 1967.
2. Concurrent Series
When a series is divided into distinct concurrent sections, we prefer that authors identify each with the appropriate label: 1/ or 2/. However, if volumes in the first section are not labeled as such, use of the 1/ label is not mandatory. The WUNT and FAT series 1 examples below thus offer both acceptable citation forms.
