Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt (ANRW)

The multivolume Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt: Geschichte und Kultur Roms im Spiegel der neueren Forschung (ANRW) can be problematic to cite because of the variety of levels, languages, and titles within this ongoing work. Articles appear in English, French, German, and Italian. Later volumes have the parallel English title Rise and Decline of the Roman World. Volumes of part 2, Principat, the material most commonly cited in biblical studies, have separate subtitles (e.g., Religion, Politische Geschichte, Sprache und Literature, etc., with nearly thirty volumes in print).

As specified in SBLHS 2 §6.4.8, we recommend a simple footnote citation method that includes the author of the specific article, the article title, the ANRW abbreviation, the volume number, and the page numbers:

76. Graham Anderson, “The pepaideumenos in Action: Sophists and Their Outlook in the Early Empire,” ANRW 33.1:80–208.

79. Anderson, “Pepaideumenos,” ANRW 33.1:86.

Like most ANRW volumes, the one cited above (vol. 33) has multiple parts (parts 1–6). The preferred way to cite volume and part is with a period between: 33.1. Pages are then specified after a colon: 33.1:80–208.

Contrary to SBLHS 2 §6.4.8, we also recommend a simplified citation style for the bibliography:

Discouraged: Anderson, Graham. “The pepaideumenos in Action: Sophists and Their Outlook in the Early Empire.” ANRW 33.1:80–208. Part 2, Principat, 33.1. Edited by Hildegard Temporini and Wolfgang Haase. Berlin: de Gruyter, 1989.

Preferred: Anderson, Graham. “The pepaideumenos in Action: Sophists and Their Outlook in the Early Empire.” ANRW 33.1:80–208.

The full bibliographic information for the ANRW volume should instead be listed in an abbreviations page. For example:

ANRW Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt: Geschichte und Kultur Roms im Spiegel der neueren Forschung. Part 2, Principat. Edited by Hildegard Temporini and Wolfgang Haase. Berlin: de Gruyter, 1972–.
