Citing Series and Journals

SBL style uses roman type, not italics, for series titles (see §6.2.24). Please be aware that the following series are incorrectly italicized in the SBLHS 2 §8.4.1 and/or §8.4.2:

AnOr Analecta Orientalia
BaF Baghdader Forschungen
BBRSup Bulletin for Biblical Research Supplements
BPOA Biblioteca del Proximo Oriente Antiguo
Ebib Études bibliques
GNS Good News Studies
IOS Israel Oriental Studies
JSHRZ Jüdische Schriften aus hellenistisch-römischer Zeit
LANE Languages of the Ancient Near East
MNTC Moffatt New Testament Commentary
MSL Materialien zum sumerischen Lexikon/Materials for the Sumerian Lexicon

On the other hand, journal titles should be italicized (§6.3.1). The following journals are incorrectly set in roman type in the SBLHS 2 §8.4.1 and/or §8.4.2:

ABSA Annual of the British School of Athens
ASTI Annual of the Swedish Theological Institute
AT Annales Theologici
CH Church History
Chm Churchman
CRAI Comptes rendus de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres
HeyJ Heythrop Journal
HibJ Hibbert Journal
MScRel Mélanges de science religieuse
MSJ The Master’s Seminary Journal
OLP Orientalia Lovaniensia Periodica
StudBib Studia Biblica
StC Studia Catholica
SPhiloA Studia Philonica Annual
SMS Syro-Mesopotamian Studies

Thanks to James Spinti of Eisenbrauns for bringing many of these to our attention. James has compiled his own list of supplementary abbreviations that the reader may find helpful.

  1. Hi–thanks for launching this blog–much appreciated. I am still limited in actual hard copy to SBL 1, but since I notice from the post above that some issues in 1 persisted in 2–here are a couple of other italics fixes, based on 1, if they were not yet caught:

    STDJ–no italics
    AGJU–no italics
    JSHRZ–no italics

Additions–these are not in James Spinti’s list, so not sure if that means they are listed in SBLHS 2 (I will send them also to him . . .):

KUSATU (Italics)–Kleine Untersuchungen zur Sprache des Alten Testaments und seiner Umwelt
JHS–in SBL 1 Journal of Hellenic Studies; now there is the online Journal of Hebrew Studies (JHS)–don’t know what to do with that one . . .

    Series:
CEJL Commentaries on Early Jewish Literature
HTKAT–Herders theologischer Kommentar zum Alten Testament (you have HTKNT)
    JCP–Jewish and Christian perspectives
PACS Philo of Alexandria Commentary Series
    SCI = Scripta Classica Israelica
    TBN–Themes in Biblical Narrative
    VCSup–Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae

    Also useful:

EDSS Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Ed. L. H. Schiffman and J. C.
VanderKam. 2 vols. Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2000 (italics)
EncJud Encyclopaedia Judaica. 16 vols. Jerusalem: Encyclopaedia Judaica, 1972 (italics)

    Again, many thanks, Ruth

    • Ruth-Thank you for your comment. As you suspected, many of these have been corrected in the new handbook, but we appreciate you bringing them to our attention. We will also consider your other excellent suggestions.

  2. In SBLHS 2 the journal Comptes rendus de l’Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres uses lowercase letters at the beginning of the words “inscriptions”, “belles”, and “lettres”, but in this blog post they are all capitalized. Also, in the handbook it is spelled “lettres” but here it is spelled “letters”. Could someone clarify?

    • Joshua-Thank you for your comment. We have capitalized “Inscriptions Belles-Lettres” because it is the name of a society. You are correct that “Letters” should be spelled “Lettres.” We have the corrected the blog post accordingly.

  3. In the new handbook the series Biblioteca del Proximo Oriente Antiguo (BPOA) is also given in italics; should that be in Roman type as well?

    • Joshua-Thank you for your comment. Yes. Biblioteca del Proximo Oriente Antiguo (BPOA) is a series and should be in roman type. We have added the abbreviation to our blog post.

  4. The journal Syro-Mesopotamian Studies is also incorrectly printed in Roman type (unless there was also a series by that name?).

  5. […] Many probably also wondered why a single book series is given two abbreviations that appear to contradict each other: the first abbreviation and title is set roman, which is the proper style for a book series, but the second is set italics, which is used for journals (see here). […]
